Drugs Inspectors

Subject to the instructions of the controlling authority, it shall be the duty of an Inspector authorized to inspect the manufacture of Ayurvedic, Siddha, Unani drugs. The State Government by notification in the Official Gazette, appoint such persons as it thinks fit, having the prescribed qualifications, to be Inspectors for such areas as may be assigned to them.

Every Inspector shall be deemed to be public servant within the meaning of section 21 of the Indian Penal Code (45 of 1860), and shall be officially subordinate to state licensing authority. As per G.O.(Ms).No.421, Health and Family Welfare (IM2-2) Department, dated 07.11.2007 District Siddha Medical officers of the Indian Medicine and Homoeopathy department is provided with additional duties as Drug Inspectors under Section 33-G of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act 1940 ( Act 23 of 1940).

Roles & Functions:

  • To inspect not less than twice a year, all premises licensed for manufacture of Ayurvedic (including Siddha) or Unani drugs within the area allotted to him and to satisfy himself that the conditions of the licence and the provisions of the Act and the rules made there under are being observed.
  • To send forthwith to the controlling authority after each inspection a detailed report.
  • To take samples of the drugs manufactured on the premises and send them for test or analysis in accordance with these rules.
  • To institute prosecutions in respect of violation of the Act and the Rules made there under.
